Watermelon Sugar
Oil on canvas, 2026
This piece is a continuation of my theme about family because it is a depiction of my brother holding watermelon. My brother, George, has always been a figure of smiles and laughter in my family in his quiet, understated way. George’s favorite color has been red for as long as I can remember, and watermelon has always been my favorite fruit, so the combination of these favorites represents our bond as siblings. The background is painted in a blue color to imitate the sea and sky behind him in the original photo, taken by our dad.
